With the assassination of President James Garfield after four months in office, Chester Arthur became a surprisingly strong reformer who exceeded politicos' expectations. Grover Cleveland dealt with problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. Benjamin Harrison, grandson of former President William Henry Harrison, opened the West to homesteaders and effectively closed the frontier.
