Wiesel is a writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and Holocaust survivor. Despite his experiences in concentration camps and the loss of his mother, father, and sister to the Nazis, Wiesel has remained a spokesperson for reconciliation and peace across all human divisions. He is perhaps best known for pushing forward the creation of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., but has also led international conferences and movements such as the Anatomy of Hate, where he said (in) "naming the disease . . . which has plagued humankind since its beginning . . . we shall restore a sense of confidence in ourselves with regard to the future." This was used to introduce the book "Night" to a group of sixth graders who were studying World War II. It was a perfect intro to the concepts of both the Holocaust and the war.
This is a fantastic program!
Great resource for students! This really helped give context to a complicated issue before beginning a novel.
