Great Cup Stack Challenge
Now Playing As: Captioned and Described (English)
The following lesson is titled the "Great Cup Stack Challenge." Each week our school partners with a local Montessori school for part of the school day. Three or four students from Heritage Montessori School visit each of the elementary school classes and actively participate in assignments and classroom activities. Mrs. Kathleen Vaughn, social worker, teaches a weekly social skills group during the time the students from the Montessori school are visiting. Each week the goal is to provide an interactive, hands-on game or challenge which enhances the students' social skills with their typical peers. Teamwork and communication challenges have been the focus of this school year. Providing our students with visual impairments the opportunity to interact with their typical peers has been a remarkable experience for everyone. Students from The Maryland School for the Blind have learned assertive communication strategies, self-advocacy skills, and friendships skills in its truest form. Students from the Heritage Montessori School have seen firsthand what it can be like living with a disability, and how to look past the obvious differences to develop personal relationships. Our group truly does put the cool in social skills! Part of the "Social Skills Cinema" series.
